About

Our work is in the parts of a home where material, function, and detail come together. A line carried across a room. A joint that closes the way it should. Each can seem like a small thing, but a home is made from small things considered together. This is where a structure begins to feel personal. Shaped by the people building it, and by the people who will live there.

We work alongside builders, architects, designers, tradespeople, and homeowners. We come into a team already in motion and try to be useful within it. Most details are better worked out in the room, looking at the same thing together. The person who says yes to the work is also there to do it, and responsible for seeing it through.

In 2010, I rode a bicycle more than 6,000 miles around America, looking for a place I might someday call home. Seeing the country that way changed how I understood houses, the ways people built, the materials they used, and how a home could belong to its surroundings.

I returned to New York and entered the trades on large custom homes in the Hamptons, some approaching 14,000 square feet. I began as a laborer and eventually led a crew, learning complex framing, hand-cut roofs, heavy timber, and the problem-solving behind them. In 2012, I moved to Colorado, where years of log and timber work taught me that structure itself could be part of the art of a home.

Becoming a general contractor, and later designing and building my own home, gave me a much wider view of the work. I had to understand the entire process and carry every decision from a line on paper to the place where it met the next. That experience shifted my attention inward, toward trim, custom woodwork, installation, and hand-applied surfaces. Mountain Standard Customs grew from that experience, and from a habit that has followed me throughout my life: if something matters, I want to understand it well enough to stand behind the result.
